Water Wise Plants

There are lots of great water wise plants to suit any garden. Your local garden centre can help you create a great “wise about water” garden, with lots of colour and variety using great water wise plants.

Many people think that native plants are their only “non-thirsty” option for the garden. Natives are great, but they’re not the only alternative. There are lots of plants from right round the world that don’t drink a lot of water.

Great water wise options include:

  • Local indigenous plants that have adapted to the local rainfall and temperature.
  • Other Australian natives – many natives from other parts of Australia are well adapted for dry conditions
  • Succulents, which are adapted to extreme arid conditions.
  • Plants from similar environments around the world such as the Mediterranean, California, South Africa, and parts of India and Asia.
  • Survivors – Some species of rose, English box, and other plants doing well in “abandoned gardens”.
  • Dry period dormancy plants – for example, winter/spring flowering bulbs such as daffodils or irises.

Things to know

Make sure you check that the plants you choose aren’t classed as weeds and aren’t likely to become weedy. Your local garden centre can help you out with this information.

There are lots of generic lists of dry-condition plants, and these can be a good starting point, but remember that they are not necessarily localised enough. Remember that environments around Australia (and even in the same city) vary a great deal.

Your local garden centre will be able to help you choose water wise plants that are right for your area. You might also like to check your local council’s website to see if they have a list.
