A healthy soil is a vital ingredient in a wise about water garden. When your soil isn't healthy, it can't hold water as efficiently and moisture can be lost through evaporation.
There are four main ways to improve the health of your soil:
Compost - is organic matter which breaks up in the soil and helps it retain water for longer.
Mulch - Using 7 - 10 cm of mulch on top of the soil will keep moisture in the soil by preventing evaporation. It will also keep your soil healthy by breaking down like a compost.
Wetting agents - Ask your local nursery or garden centre about wetting agents, which help water to soak into your soil.
Water crystals - will absorb and hold moisture in the soil. They help to store water for plants to use later.
