The Italian garden and the Renaissance: a time of design, engineering and learning

During the Renaissance, Italian aristocracy and the merchant classes created gardens that reflected the great leaps in design and learning of the period.

Terraces were chiselled into the hilly Italian terrain, and separate garden "rooms" were created. Symmetry was considered to be a very important feature of these gardens, reflecting the incredible advances in design and engineering.
