The French garden style: worshipping the King
French gardens of the seventeenth century were created to show off the great wealth and power of royalty and the aristocracy. Great tracts of land were razed for the creation of gardens. The great garden of Versailles Palace shows Louis XIV's love of grandeur, with great statues and fountains erected within very formal gardens, creating impressive views and vistas. This was very clearly meant to show the power of royalty, who was said to rule by divine right.
